First step when it comes to polishing your boat or yacht. What material is it? Gelcoat or LP - two-part linear polyurethane (LP). If it's a older boat it should be fairly easier by looking at the gloss level on the finish. Gelcoat is usually fairly dull and by wiping the surface with a dry towel there can be significant material transfer. (color on towel) LP on the other hand holds its finish very well.
